The first Troopers aircraft was delivered in July 1931 to Lieutenant Tremaine Hughes and was based at Oneida, NY. It was a Model 8 Fleet powered by a 125 horsepower engine with a top speed of 110 MPH. Unfortunately, Hughes along with passenger Theopholis Gaines were killed, when the plane crashed during heavy fog on January 15, 1932. This ended the Troopers airwing until it was revived in 1966-67 by the NYS Thruway.
Members of the first 1967 revived flight crew were Chief Pilot John F. Ryan, Andrew J. Liddle, Kenneth R. Earle & Robert C. Stoddard, each designated a Technical Sergeant. They flew a 4 passenger Cessena Skyhawk painted Thruway blue & white.
