New York Troopers - History

 In July 1917, the original 232 troopers of the newly formed New York State Constabulary were directed to appear at the New York National Guard farm at Manlius, NY for instruction & training to prepare them for police work.  Since then & through the early 1960s, recruit troopers worked in the field for a period of time before attending the Police School. The field work was considered necessary to determine if the recruit was suitable for police work.

 1/3 of each Troops manpower was always kept in reserve at or near the Troops headquarters. While at barracks, classes & updates on law was provided to troopers, as they rotated duties. Enlistments were for two year terms with new hires trained at the troop level.  
 
 
 
 
Prohibition period (1920 – 1933) began Jan 17, 1920, mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.   This was a period of “enlistment”.
