Horse patrols traveled on pre-determined routes, usually in pairs going 20 to 25 miles a day. The patrol would telephone or send a postcard daily noting where they expected to be in 24 hours. They were usually out for 30 days at a time. Two different troopers would travel the same route 10 days later giving the impression that there were more troopers then there actually were. This system prevailed into 1919, when it was replaced by the county zone system where 2 troopers were assigned to a county usually for 3 months, then rotated to another county.
